The Captain
Born and raised in Sooke, BC, Russ Nicks is Sooke Coastal Explorations owner and primary skipper. Growing up on the western shores of Vancouver Island, Russ brings authenticity to his tours. He is familiar with the geography, weather patterns, wildlife and history of Sooke, Victoria, and almost everything in between and beyond the western Vancouver Island shores. With Russ you’re getting local knowledge and not a scripted spiel. Russ is a Transport Canada certified Whale Watch Operator, an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary unit and a former firefighter; so, when it comes to safety and vessel operation, Russ is as skilled as they come.

The Vessel

The 12-passenger high-speed Zodiac Hurricane features a 250 horsepower 4-stroke engine, which uses less fuel and emits fewer emissions into the ocean air. Respect for the whales and wildlife, as well as their habitat is a high priority for Sooke Coastal Explorations. An eco-friendly Zodiac is just one of the commitments we make to reduce the impact of our operations on the environment.
